Better, thought Sid 6.7, as he admired himself in the new blue suit. Matches my eyes.

The real world was a mirror. Sid 6.7 was on every big-screen monitor as he walked among the hostages, stepping over the kneeling form of the shoeless, shirtless man in his underwear.

He swayed and swaggered, dancing, the music picking up his every move, the video feeding back through the audio in an endless swelling digital loop.

Sid 6.7 strutted. He stomped.

He struck a chord on every keyboard; he flicked on all the drum machines; he paused at every open mike to coax a new sound from a hostage with a blow, a shot, or even a sharp look, until a cacophony of screams, gurgles, pleas, moans, and death rattles filled the vast ballroom.

An orchestra. It was perfect until a discordant voice broke the spell:

“Police! Drop your weapon!”

Another voice came from the other side of the ballroom:

“Do it! Now!”

Sid 6.7 stopped, standing on his toes like a still of Fred Astaire. Two uniformed cops stood in the doorway by the elevator, their guns drawn. Two more stood on the other side, by a rear fire door. Their guns were also drawn.

“Silly bastards,” Sid 6.7 chided as he pulled both Glocks and fired in two directions at once.

KRAK!

KRAK!

“Don't you realize that nano is faster than meat?”

KRAK!

KRAK!

“And more accurate.”

Four cops fell, two on each side of the room, all drilled neatly in the forehead.
